How are you doing? No, really. How are you doing? Have you been anxious, unsettled, uneasy, off? Have you have been super productive, getting shit done, checking things off your to-do list? Maybe your days have been a little of both, like mine? I feel like each day has had many ups and downs.

There are days I’ve woken up and felt ready to go. I stuck to my morning meditation, journaling, stretching routine, and felt good. Then there’ve been days when I don’t feel motivated to get out of bed right away. My mood has been changing by the day, hour, and minute.

To say it has been interesting is an understatement of how things have been in our world. During the first couple of weeks, I found myself not only socially distancing, but almost completely distancing myself. I didn’t feel like talking to anyone, connecting with anyone.

I kept myself busy and distracted with our recent move, which allowed me to distance myself from the full force of my thoughts, feelings, and emotions – until all the boxes were unpacked – then all those thoughts, feelings, and emotions that I was also distancing myself from came a-knocking.

That is when the voices came through. What have you accomplished? Why haven’t you checked in on so and so? Really, why haven’t you been exercising more? Eating better? Do you need to watch another movie? What have you done all day? Blah. Blah. Blah.

Can anyone else relate to the voices? Do you know how to get rid of them? If you do, please let me know.

Do you want to know how to live with them? I know, why would you want to do that, right? Well, I feel like those voices are always going to be there, at varying degrees, but what we can work on is NOT giving them ALL the attention, the power they are seeking.

It is normal to have self-doubt. It is normal in stressful, unprecedented times that these voices begin to creep in and we start to give them the attention they are seeking. It is okay. You are okay. We are okay.

Although we want to be careful to not give these voices ALL of our attention, ALL of the time. I believe these voices are giving us clues, letting us know that our lives may be unbalanced.

So how do we find our balance again? This is different for everyone and it can change often. For me, the key has been meditation. It is what helps me get centered, grounded and balanced again. I love the quiet, the stillness, the peace that meditating brings me.

The second runner up is getting my thoughts, feelings, and emotions out of me by either talking to someone or writing them down in my journal. Once I can get those voices out of my head, I can begin to let go of the hold they have on me.

Many studies have shown the benefits of meditation, such as reducing stress, increasing focus, improving sleep, and relationships. If you would like to get you started right away – simply find some quiet time to slow down and breathe in and breathe out. You can add a mantra such as “peace and calm.”

You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” Marcus Aurelius
